We did it. Shame on me and my darling. Our first longer stay abroad was ... a package holiday tour.
In summer 2012, my first year of apprenticeship was not over yet - this explains our misery to book this awful touristic product, we took up our travel to the Greek island Kos.
Located in the Aegean Sea before Turkey it counts 33.000 inhabitants, most of them living in the principal town Kos Town.

3 flight hours, 9 nights, under 500 Euros and not Majorca. These where the convincing arguments for our trip. The hotel was a family business, therefore really cozy and small. As soon as we left the water-passing caretakers in the bus behind, we did not feel anymore like in a package tour. We had to look after ourself. It was ... wonderful.
After one or two days at the beach and pool, we rent a scooter. That was the best decision of the whole stay. The speedometer might have been broken but the fuel gauge worked. What is more important? Think about it.

Kos is quite a small island and three days were enough to see almost everything listed in our Marco Polo guide. Every day another part. First eastern, next centre and on the third the western.
It sounds corny but it is the perfect isle for a perfect summer holiday. I should mention what we visited it after the crisis and Greece was very thankful for tourists. Even though Mrs Merkel was not willed to give them more out of the golden Pandora`s box "Europa Rettungsschirm".

Like every Greek country, Kos has a lot of cultural sights. The ruins of the Asklepion, the castle of knights of St.John, the tree of Hippocrates who was born on that isle, several excavation sites, food markets in Kos Town, even a hot spring. I recommend you to take a scooter, quad or car to explore this beautiful place on Earth. There are vendors ten a penny.

Greek food is delicious and healthy. At least I hope so. On my travels I nearly always book a hotel room with breakfast and that`s it. I rather like to go out in the evening, enjoy myself reading wrong typed menu cards and seek for the best places to eat. Kos was paradise to a foodie like me. One time we got lost with the scooter in the sandy hills and found ourself at the end at a restaurant with a breath-taking view about the sea.

Nine days filled with sunshine, heat, sea, food, joghurt with honey for breakfast, bikinis, beachball and hanging around at the Tigaki beach. We successfully took a break from everyday`s life and came closer together because we discovered a common passion: travelling.
