I want to go back to Westerland

Last year in november I dediced to do a goodbye-trip with my best friend. The choice was not easy because our destination should have been not so far away and not that expensive.

So we travelled one weekend to the northernmost German island Sylt. After explaining my boyfriend that it is a great idea and ignore his arguments about cold weather and low season, I searched for ways to get there.

We took the train from Hamburg-Altona in North Germany which is only 3 hours through nowhere.

Where to stay? Sylt is an exclusive and posh Island and we needed something around the capital (9000 inhabitants actually do not justify that term) to get there easily from the main station.

One holidaycheck later we reserved a double room in the Sylt Motel nearby the main station.

The interior was as creative and stylish like the name. But clean and that is most important to me.

After a foggy ride we finally arrived and checked in. It was already late and dark but we just had to see the sea.. well, guess you all know that pushing feeling.

The sound of the sea through the dark night and the smell of salt and infinity was worth it.

Afterwards we went inside an italian restaurant and slept early.

Next day we desperatly looked for a bicycle rental. Desperatly? Yes, because in low season this is not as easy as you may think. After asking in the tourist office we found one.

For less than 10 euros per day you are mobile and flexible.

Sylt is just 38 kilometres in length and we made it from Westerland to Kampen. This is not more than a third but to have an excuse; it was freezing and rainy. With several stops at the rough sea including a delicious visit at Gosch, the famous fish restaurant in Sylt, we somehow got lost. We went wrong somewhere before Kampen and came out at the garden of the "Kupferkanne", a famous cafe on Sylt. Feeling cold and desorientated struggling up the hills back to civilisation we decided to return.

Did I already mention that we have been there in the off-season? And with off I mean off-off.

Back in Westerland, the swimming bath was closed, like pubs, like tours, like everything.

Saturday evening we spent in the local cinema. I know - you can go everywhere else watching films. But why not on Sylt? 

Sunday we took the bus to the harbour of List. By the way, the bus network system is very good on this island. The route Westerland-List is running every 20 minutes - even in november.

List is a very peaceful, calm and silent place in the North of Sylt used as a ferry port to islands of Denmark and Halligen in the North Sea. 

We strolled along the beach and dunes, looking over the endless sea and listening to the smooth waves and our thoughts. 

Our shadows

To be honest, Sylt is overall an island where you have to suffice yourself. It is always just you, the seagulls, beach, sea and your footprints in the sand. If you can do, it is breathtakingly awesome.
